Varietal Details:

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is the dominant varietal at Regan Vineyards recognizing how this delicate wine thrives in this cool-climate site. At Bargetto’s Regan Estate Vineyards four clones of Pinot Noir have been planted: Pommard, Mount Eden, Dijon 115 and Martini. Each wine is vinified separately and then either bottled alone or blended with other clones. Today, Bargetto produces four wines from Regan Estate: Mt Eden clone, Reserve, Pommard Clone and Santa Cruz Mountains. Each distinct wine and reflects the unique terroir of Regan Vineyards.

Chardonnay

At Regan Estate Vineyards, two clones of Chardonnay are grown.

The Mt. Eden clone was brought to the Santa Cruz Mountains Paul Masson in the late 19th Century. This clone comes from Corton-Charlemagne in Burgundy France, and is one of the most expensive Chardonnays of the world. It offers a unique rich wine with distinct mineral character. This wine is the foundation of Bargetto’s reserve Chardonnay.

Clone 4 is a large cluster clone, and is the typical selection in most north coast vineyards. This clone yields grapes with deep fruitiness and sturdy acidity, critical for long aging.

Merlot

Traditionally planted in warm climate, Merlot has been found to thrive in the cool climate of Regan Estate Vineyards, and it has become regular medal winning wine. The finest Merlot from Regan goes into the Reserve wine (blended with Cabernet Sauvignon from Peter Martin Ray vineyard). A softer Santa Cruz Mountains Merlot wine is produced from Regan as well.

Pinot Grigio

Regan Vineyards was the first vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains to plant Pinot Grigio, and was one of the pioneering California wineries of this varietal. Pinot Grigio is a relative to Pinot Noir, and its name means “gray” pinot in Italian-but its color when ripe is actually bronze.

Dolcetto

Three varieties go into the production of the BARGETTO ultra premium Italian blend LA VITA: Dolcetto, Refosco and Nebbiolo.

Dolcetto produces the most grandiose size clusters-some weighing more than two pounds. Dolcetto grows in the Italian hometown of the BARGETTO’s, Castelnuovo Don Bosco, in the Piedmont region of northern Italy.

Refosco

This grape yields a wine with very deep purple color and a unique black pepper aroma. It ripens very late, and in some vintages is not picked until November. The Refosco, along with the Dolcetto and Nebbiolo go into our proprietary wine LA VITA, which is aged in barrel and bottle for four years prior to release.

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo in Italy yields two of the most famous red wines: Barolo and Barbaresco. To achieve intensity in flavor and color, 75% of the fruit is removed from the vines in order to create a more intensely flavored wine. It is a late ripener with naturally high acidity and tannin.
